Occupational Therapy
An Occupational Therapist (OT) is a qualified health professional. The role of the OT is to work with children who have difficulties with the practical skills necessary for their everyday life. An OT aims to enable your child to be as independent as possible with everyday activities at home and nursery/school.
Our therapists are trained to provide specialist assessments and therapy to identify the causes of your child‘s difficulties and to help your child overcome these to achieve their full potential.
At Heel & Toe we employ specialist OT’s who have lots of experience working with children with additional needs. Our OT’s are trained in various treatment methods including Sensory Integration.

Children’s Occupational Therapy (OT) is all about improving function in children. OT covers a wide range of conditions and problems to promote function in relation to many activities children complete on a daily basis. Some of the common conditions include:

- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Attachment disorders
- Cerebral Palsy (CP)
- Developmental Delay
- Dyspraxia
- Hemiplegia
- Sensory Processing Problems (SPD)
Some of the common problems we can help with include:
- Delayed developmental milestones
- Sensory issues
- Poor handwriting
- Struggles to dress undo buttons/zips
- Clumsiness
- Poor ball skills
- Difficulty balancing
- Poor hand eye co-ordination
- Poor fine motor skills
- Poor gross motor skills
- Low confidence
- Social and emotional difficulties
Activities that are fun and have meaning result in an improvement in skills and improved confidence in our children
Children learn through sensory experiences that include touch, movement, body awareness, sight, sound, smell, taste and the pull of gravity. The process of the brain organising and interpreting this information is called Sensory Integration. Sensory Integration (SI) provides a crucial foundation for later, more complex learning and behaviour. Some children learn differently and need more help to build foundational and functional skills.
Caroline Clay is an experienced Occupational Therapist who will be running sessions at the Heel and Toe Sensory Gym, she is a trained Ayres Sensory Integration practitioner and a trainer in Developmental Play.
Her sessions are fun and functional, “active, individually-tailored sensory motor activities, contextualised in play and delivered at the just-right level of challenge”. (Schaaf 2017)
